David Cicilline
David Cicilline (born 1961) is Mayor of Providence, Rhode Island. He was the first openly homosexual Mayor of an American state capital.
Cicilline was born and raised in Providence and then Narragansett. He attended Brown University and Georgetown University Law School. He worked as a lawyer in Washington, DC and Providence before being elected to Rhode Island's state legislature in 1995. Coming out in 1999, he served a total of four terms in the legislature.
Cicilline easily won the Democratic nomination for Mayor of Providence in 2002, with over 50% of the vote, beating former Mayor Joseph Paolino . He went on to win the election in a landslide with over 80% of the vote, aided by a strong public feeling for the Democrats following the indictment of Mayor Vincent Cianci, a former Republican turned independent, in 2001.
