David HaLevi Segal
Rabbi David ben (son of) Israel HaLevi Segal (1586-1667) was a Polish Rabbi and Halakhist (expert in Jewish law).
Segal was born in 1586 in the thriving Jewish community of Cracow, Poland. He was the son-in-law and pupil of Rabbi Joel Sirkis , whom he frequently quotes in his works.
Segal authored a commentary on the Shulchan Aruch known as the Turei Zahav ("Golden towers", abbreviated as Taz) which is considered one of the major commentaries of the Shulchan Aruch. Segal is frequently sited as the Baal HaTaz (master of the Taz) because of the name of his commentary. Other work includes a supercommentary on Rashi's Torah commentary.
He passed away in 1667 in Lvov, Poland.
