David Heathcoat-Amory

The Right Honourable David Heathcoat-Amory (born March 21, 1949) is a British politician, and Conservative member of Parliament for Wells. He is a member of the Privy Council.

Heathcoat-Amory was educated at Eton College and Oxford University. He was President of the Oxford University Conservative Association.

Heathcoat-Amory was a candidate for Brent South at the 1979 General Election and was elected in Wells at the 1983 election. He was a whip and minister under Margaret Thatcher and John Major, resigning from the Government in 1996. He was William Hague's shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury and Secretary of State for Trade and Industry from 1997 to 2001. Since then he has focused on the European Constitution.

Heathcoat-Amory's uncle, Derick Heathcoat-Amory, 1st Viscount Amory, was also a Somerset MP and became Chancellor of the Exchequer.
