The number of the ethnic Roma in Bulgaria is generally thought to be between 1.5 and 2 times higher than what census results indicate as a great number of people of Roma origin present themselves both in censuses, as well as in ordinary life as Bulgarians, Turks or Vlachs. This is partly owing to the fact that they speak Bulgarian, Turkish or Vlach as mother tongue, and partly as an identity defferent from the Roma one is generally thought to provide better chances for integration in Bulgarian society. In 1994, INTEREG estimated the size of the Roma community in Bulgaria at 650,000 (7.7% of the population).
