Division (disambiguation)
Division is a term used in many different contexts:
- In geography it is a separation between land masses; see Continental divide.
- In mathematics, division forms the opposite operation to multiplication.
- In the military, a division is a unit, typically consisting of from 10,000 to 20,000 troops.
- In enterprise management , a division is a part of an enterprise, often independent from other divisions and occupying a high position in the enterprise's hierarchy.
- In organised sport, a division often consists of a group of comparable teams who compete amongst themselves for a divisional title .
- In cellular biology, cell division is the process in which biological cells multiply.
- In botany, a division is the botanical counterpart to zoology's phylum.
- In a legislature, a division is a manner by which the votes of legislators are recorded.
- In the United Kingdom Parliament a division is another name for constituency or Parliamentary seat.
- In pipe organs a division is a grouping of pipe ranks, often with its own case, windchest, and keyboard.
- In the British police, a division is a large territorial unit, now often referred to as a Basic Command Unit.
