Division of Calare
The Division of Calare is an Australian Electoral Division in New South Wales. The division was created in 1906 (it was previously called Canobolas) and is named for the Aboriginal name for the Lachlan River, part of which was in the Division on its original boundaries. (The name should be pronounced Kal-ah-ree, but the pronunciation Kul-air is established.) Calare was originally based on Forbes, Orange and Parkes, but subsequent boundary changes have moved it eastwards and it now takes in Bathurst, Lithgow and Orange. On these boundaries it is a marginal seat between the Australian Labor Party (which held it 1983-96) and the National Party, but it has been held by an independent, Peter Andren, since 1996. Andren seems to be unbeatable in the seat: once he retires it will probably revert to its marginal status.
