Dominique Catherine de Pérignon

Dominique-Catherine Pérignon, marquis de Grenade (1754-1818) was marshal of France.

He made his military career during French Revolutionary Wars. In 1793-1795 he successfully commanded the Army of the Eastern Pyrenees and defeated the Spaniards at Escola and Roses. In 1796 he was appointed ambassador to Spain and comcluded the Treaty of San Idelfonso against Britain. He was then involved in a smuggling affair and compromised with a young woman spy. In 1798 Perignon was recalled and to the Italian Army. At the Battle of Novi he was wounded and captured. Perignon was made senator (1801), Marshal of France (1804) and count of the Empire by Napoleon. From 18 September 1806 to 23 July 1808 Count Perignon was the Governor-general of Parma, Piacenza, and Guastalla. Later named to Naples, Pérignon, recently ennobled, was a close acquaintance of the royal couple. He returned to France in 1814 and rallied to Louis XVIII, who raised named him marquis de Grenade.
