Download.com is a popular internet download directory website created by CNet.
Rather than actually host the files up for download, it usually simply links to an alternate download location and allows users to comment and rate the files, although it does occasionally serve up files via its FTP.
Occasionally, the site's editors will rate the downloadable (and normally executable) file themselves. These ratings are on a scale of 0 to 5, and also contain a summary of the file. This summary includes information relating to such issues as spyware and adware, and also the reliabilty and usefulness of the file.
In 2004, Download.com added a Music feature to replace the defunct MP3.com. You may download music in a variety of genres for free from this area of the site, and the artists range from amateurs to professionals. Artists may upload their information and songs to the site. All submissions go through a review process.
