East India Club
The East India Club is a gentlemen's club situated in St James's Square, London. Founded in 1849, its full name is the East India, Devonshire, Sports and Public Schools' Club. Membership of the club is open to former male pupils of British public schools, (those independent schools which are members of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference).
The club was founded in the 19th century, membership being extended to “The servants of the East India Company and Commissioned Officers of Her Majesty’s Army and Navy”.
Since then, the club has amalgamated with the Devonshire, the Sports and the Public School’s Clubs. Its facilities include dining rooms, bars, a library, lounges, a gymnasium, snooker rooms and 67 bedrooms.
As the club's constitution does not allow female members, a female equivalent of the club has been set up, situated in Mayfair, called the University Women’s Club .
