Ecole des Mines de Paris
L'école nationale supérieure des Mines de Paris is a French engineering and earth science university.
It was founded in 1783 by order of the king Louis XVI in order to train people in mining (of natural resource rather than land mines). Thus, the "École Royale des Mines" was established in the in Paris, before moving for good to the (by the ). The initial remit evolved over time with the progress of technological development and transformations in society; today it offers a broad range of learning and research opportunities.
There was always an interest in the question of safety of the transportation of material, a subject to which a number of engineers were devoted, especially in respect of iron ore extraction. The certification and registration of the vehicles so used were given to the Ecole des Mines.
There is a distinction between an ingénieur civil des Mines and an ingénieur au corps des Mines. The latter had mostly come through the and followed a set of courses distinct from their civilian peers. Even the war memorial lists the two groups separately.
