Edgemere is a census-designated place located in Baltimore County, Maryland. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 9,248.

Geography

Edgemere is located at 39°13'45" North, 76°26'56" West (39.229258, -76.448981).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 53.3 km² (20.6 mi²). 28.0 km² (10.8 mi²) of it is land and 25.3 km² (9.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 47.47% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,248 people, 3,530 households, and 2,513 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 330.3/km² (855.6/mi²). There are 3,764 housing units at an average density of 134.4/km² (348.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 93.43% White, 5.19% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.18% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,530 households out of which 28.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 27.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 98.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $46,928, and the median income for a family is $55,662. Males have a median income of $40,577 versus $28,398 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $20,802. 7.0% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.0% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
