Edward I. Edwards

Edward I. Edwards (December 1, 1863 - January 26, 1931) was Governor of New Jersey from 1920 to 1923 and a Senator from 1923 to 1929. He was a member of the Democratic Party.

Born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1863, Edwards attended the Jersey City public schools and New York University in New York City. He studied law and engaged in banking and in the general contracting business. He later became president and chairman of the board of directors of the First National Bank of Jersey City.

He entered politics when he became the comptroller of the treasury of New Jersey and served between 1911 and 1917. He was a member of the State senate between 1918 and 1920. He served as the Governor of New Jersey, and was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1923, to March 3, 1929. He was defeated for reelection, running against Hamilton F. Kean , having 41.8% of the vote to Kean's 57.8%. He died in Jersey City.
