Edward Stevenson Browne (VC, CB) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Details

He was 26 years old, and a Lieutenant in the 1st Bn., 24th Regiment (later The South Wales Borderers), British Army during the Zulu War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 29 March 1879 at Inhlobana (Hlobane ), South Africa, when the Mounted Infantry were being driven in by the enemy, Lieutenant Browne twice galloped back under heavy fire and helped on to his horse one of the mounted men who would otherwise have fallen into enemy hands.

He later achieved the rank of Brigadier General.

His Victoria Cross is displayed at the South Wales Borderers Museum (Brecon, Powys, Wales).
