Edwin van der Sar

Edwin van der Sar (born October 29, 1970 in Voorhout, Netherlands) is a Dutch football player. He is one of the most identifiable goalkeepers in Europe because of his height (1.97 m, 6' 5½").

Van der Sar began his career at Ajax, where he was part of the team who won the Champions League in 1995. He went on to play for Juventus, and since 2001 has played in the English Premiership with Fulham.

Van der Sar made his international debut in June 1995 against Belarus. He has represented the Dutch national team over 80 times and was the in goal during all of three of their recent defeats on penalties in major competitions: in Euro 96, 1998 World Cup, and Euro 2000.

In Euro 2004, during the penalty shootout at the end of the quarterfinal against Sweden, van der Sar saved a penalty from Olof Mellberg, giving Arjen Robben the decisive chance to end the shootout in the Dutch team's first shootout win ever.
