Elmina Castle
Elmina Castle was built in 1482 by the Portuguese as the first trading post the Ghana (Gold Coast), in the city of Cape Coast for the use in the slaver-trade. In 1637 it was taken over by the Dutch, in 1872 by the British. It is reported to be the oldest extant European building south of the Sahara. The Castle is built in a mixture of Portugese and Dutch styles. The castle is recognized by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Monument . It was extensively restored by the Ghanaian Government in the 1990s.
Other Slave Castles include Cape Coast Castle and Castle Saint Jago .
