Elvis Crespo

Elvis Crespo (born July 30, 1971 in New York, New York) is a Puerto Rican Salsa singer. He was named "Elvis" after American singer Elvis Presley. When he was small, he and his mother moved to Caguas, Puerto Rico, where Crespo spent his childhood and adolescent years.

Biography

As a teenager, Crespo dreamed of becoming a baseball player or a member of "Menudo". He began to let his hair grow at a young age, hoping that his hair and voice would convince Menudo management to choose him during some audition.

During the early 1990s, Crespo was a member of the internationally known merengue band "Grupomania ". With Grupomania, he would become known to young women and merengue fans in general. One of the group's largest hits while Crespo was there was "Linda, Eh" ("Beautiful, Ah?").

After being a member of that group for a while, Crespo decided to embark on a solo career. His first CD, "Suavemente" ("Softly"), recorded for Sony Discos, was a major international hit. Crespo began to tour all of Latin America as well as parts of the United States, and he became a teen idol to Hispanic girls. After "Suavemente", the CD's title song, became a number one hit on many countries' charts, Crespo also became a common guest at Spanish speaking North American television variety shows, such as "El Show de Cristina" and "Sabado Gigante". Crespo later became known as the "Latin King" at that time.

In 1999, he recorded a follow up, "Pintame" ("Paint Me"). He included a song against children violence in that CD; the song was named "El Pequeno Luis" ("Little Luis").

It has been rumored that Crespo has had a drug addiction, but this rumor has never been confirmed. A newborn Christian, Crespo has a small son, Elvis Jr., who is already showing interest in following his father's footsteps as a singer.
