Emme

The Emme is a river in Switzerland. It rises in the area between Hohgant and Augstmatthorn in the Canton of Bern. The 80 km long Emme flows through the Emmental and flows into the Aare below Solothurn. The drainage area is 983 km². The average discharge at the mouth is approximately 20 m³/s. The maximum discharge amounts to up to 500 m ³/s.

The Emme is known for its sudden variations in water discharge. The narration Die Wassernot im Emmental (The flood in the Emmental) of Jeremias Gotthelf describes very impressive the largest well-known flood from August 13, 1837. This and other floods led to the fact that in the 19th century the Emme was canalized over most of its length and dams were built on both sides.

The tributaries of the Emme are the Ilfis and the Limpach .
