Endicott is a village located in Broome County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 13,038. The village is named after Harry B. Endicott, a shoe manufacturer, who founded the community as the "Home of the square deal."

History

Endicott was originally incorporated as Union Village in 1892, but was consolidated with an adjacent community and named Endicott in 1921. Endicott is part of the "Triple Cities" along with Johnson City and Binghamton. The village was the former site of Tri-Cities College of Syracuse University which later became Harpur College, and then Binghamton University.

Geography

The village is on the north side of the Susquehanna River and the Southern Tier Expressway.

Endicott is located at 42°6'11" North, 76°3'17" West (42.103074, −76.054687)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²). 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 13,038 people, 5,996 households, and 3,015 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,603.2/km² (4,156.1/mi²). There are 6,686 housing units at an average density of 822.1/km² (2,131.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 91.65% White, 3.75% African American, 0.25% Native American, 1.96% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.66% from two or more races. 1.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,996 households out of which 24.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.4% are married couples living together, 13.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 49.7% are non-families. 41.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.09 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the village the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.4 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $26,032, and the median income for a family is $35,858. Males have a median income of $27,780 versus $21,320 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,274. 18.7% of the population and 15.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 26.0% of those under the age of 18 and 10.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Facts about Endicott, New York

Endicott is known as the birthplace of computers, because the company that became IBM was established there in 1906. Endicott was also the former home of the Endicott Johnson shoe company.The PGA TOUR's B.C. Open is played each July at En-Joie Golf Course on the east side of the village.
