Enfield is a town located in Hartford County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 45,212. It sits on the border with Massachusetts and the Connecticut River.

Enfield was settled in 1679 by settlers from Salem, Massachusetts.

Enfield was incorporated in Massachusetts in 1683. In 1750, the town seceded and became part of Connecticut. Enfield is home to the U.S. headquarters of Danish plastic game manufacturer LEGO, which is also the town's largest employer. Hallmark Cards is the second-largest employer.

In the past, Enfield manufactured carpet and gunpowder.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 88.6 km² (34.2 mi²). 86.5 km² (33.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.43% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 45,212 people, 16,418 households, and 11,394 families residing in the town. The population density is 523.0/km² (1,354.3/mi²). There are 17,043 housing units at an average density of 197.1/km² (510.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 89.74% White, 5.61% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.34% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.57% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 3.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,418 households out of which 31.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 34.2% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 110.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 112.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $52,810, and the median income for a family is $60,528. Males have a median income of $42,335 versus $31,082 for females. The per capita income for the town is $21,967. 4.0% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.4% of those under the age of 18 and 5.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
