Entner-Doudoroff Pathway

A series of reactions that catabolize glucose to pyruvic acid using a different set of enzymes from those used in either glycolysis or the pentose phosphate pathway. Most bacteria use glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway. There are a few bacteria that substitute Glycolysis with the Entner-Doudoroff Pathway.

Glycolysis has a net yield of 2 ATP for every one Glucose molecule processed. The Entner-Doudoroff Pathway has a net yield of 1 ATP for every Glucose molecule processed.

The gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis utilizes the Entner-Doudoroff Pathway.
