Erath County, Texas

Erath County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 33,001. Its county seat is Stephenville6. Erath is named for George Bernard Erath , an early surveyor and a soldier at the Battle of San Jacinto.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,823 km² (1,090 mi²). 2,814 km² (1,086 mi²) of it is land and 9 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,001 people, 12,568 households, and 8,106 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (30/mi²). There are 14,422 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 89.72% White, 0.82% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 6.78% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. 15.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,568 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.70% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.50% are non-families. 27.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.60% under the age of 18, 17.00% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 19.10% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.90 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $30,708, and the median income for a family is $39,491. Males have a median income of $27,972 versus $20,765 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,655. 16.00% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.70% of those under the age of 18 and 7.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
