Ethyl morphine
Ethyl morphine is a chemical compound used as a cough-suppressing medicine. Chemically, it is a morphine molecule with a -O-C2H5 substituted for one of the -OH groups. In the body it is converted into morphine and norethylmorphine.
A therapeutical dose for adults is up to 25 mg, 4 times per day. Doses over 120 mg in adults can lead to severe side effects, possibly life-threatening.
Sustained use of ethylmorphine can lead to a physical dependency. Ethylmorphine dampens the breathing reflex, which can be dangerous for people with sleep apnea.
