Far Eastern Economic Review

Far Eastern Economic Review (FEER, 遠東經濟評論) is unusual among English language Asian news magazines in having been founded and developed entirely in Asia. It is a Hong Kong-based weekly business magazine originally published every Thursday. Because of poor finances, the magazine has switched to a monthly format, beginning in December 2004. The US-based business publisher Dow Jones & Company owns the magazine as well as The Wall Street Journal. Concurrent with the change in format, Hugo Restall, previously with the Asian Wall Street Journal, will serve as the new chief editor of the magazine.

FEER covers a variety of topics including politics, business, economics, technology and social and cultural issues throughout Asia, focusing on Southeast Asia and Greater China. It has a reputation for emphasizing local perspectives. FEER's target market is primarily in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and nearby parts of Southeast Asia. It has a circulation of roughly 100,000 in that region and over 13,000 in the rest of the world, primarily in North America and Europe.

Editorial purpose

Image:GCovers.jpg

According to the editorial statement in their inaugural issue:

The purpose of this weekly economic publication is to analyse and interpret financial, commercial and industrial developments; to collect economic news; and to present views and opinions with the intent to improve existing conditions. Politics and economics being connatural, it will be inevitable that this publication may at times appear to transgress its primary objective by reporting on, and dealing with, political affairs.

History

The first issue of Far Eastern Economic Review was published on October 16, 1946.
