Farad'n
Farad'n is a fictional character in the Dune universe created by Frank Herbert. Farad'n is a major character in the science fiction novel Children of Dune by Frank Herbert.
Farad'n was to become leader of House Corrino during the regency of Alia Atreides. Unlike his mother Wensicia and other Corrinos before him, he prefers history and books to that of becoming an Emperor. In the book Children of Dune, Farad'n almost takes the place of Irulan in the previous books as the narrator. He stands almost as an incarnation of the author, analyzing the situations that arise throughout the book. In the book he "kidnaps" Jessica, and begins to learn the ways of the Bene Gesserit. Through a complicated set of events Farad'n is accused of killing Leto II.
The actual culprit is his mother Wensicia, which is not to say he did not know of the assassination attempt (using two Laza tigers with remote brain control devices). The tigers are actually killed by Leto and Ghanima. Leto realizes that to dethrone his aunt Alia it would be better if he were thought to be dead for the time being. Ghanima in order not to be proved false by Truthsayers uses self hypnosis to rearrange her mind to actually believe Leto was killed. She therefore promptly declares kanly on Farad'n.
Alia uses this to try and assassinate Farad'n, by arranging for the marriage between Ghani and Farad'n where she knows that he will be killed by his would be wife. However Farad'n is saved in the last moments by the reappearance of Leto II, clad in his new sand trout skin. Upon muttering secret words Ghani is reawakened and realizes the truth. Farad'n is therefore not killed and in time Ghanima and Farad'n become lovers (as the siblings Ghanima and Leto assume an imperial marriage in name only.
On coming to power, Leto proclaims Farad'n his scribe and historian and renames him the Harq al Ada or the breaker of habit. Though Farad'n lost his chance to become emperor to Leto II; he did have the consolation of being the father of further generations of Atreides with his relationship with Ghanima, these include later characters Moneo and Siona. Moneo would become Leto's Majordomo, in God Emperor of Dune, whereas Siona would be destined to kill Leto II.
