February Album Writing Month

February Album Writing Month, or FAWM, is a collaborative songwriting challenge wherein participants hold each other accountable to write 14 songs in the 28 days of February (one song every other day, on average). Some participants elect to make MP3 demo recordings of their songs and post them, with lyrics, to the official FAWM website. Participants can also provide feedback for lyrical/compositional improvements.

The project began in 2004 with a mere 4 participants, all of whom reached the 14-song goal, cumulatively writing 66 new songs. It continued in 2005 with 119 registrants, of whom 68 of whom wrote at least one song and 25 met the 14-song goal, cumulatively writing 513 new songs. Songwriters to date are primarily North American, though some hail from the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Some call FAWM "The musician's answer to NaNoWriMo." Like such blitzkrieg artistic endeavors, there is no tangible prize for reaching 14 songs other than self-satisfaction, and nothing is to stop one from cheating.
