Final Fantasy: Unlimited

(Redirected from Final Fantasy Unlimited)

Final Fantasy: Unlimited is a Japanese anime series based on Squaresoft's popular Final Fantasy role-playing game franchise. It was released in Japan in October 2001 and while it was originally scheduled for 52 weekly episodes, low ratings resulted in the series to be cut to 25 episodes. Final Fantasy: Unlimited was intended to bring in a new audience base and attract new interest in the Final Fantasy realm.

Final Fantasy: Unlimited incorporates both 2D animation and 3D graphics, and takes elements from every Final Fantasy game with 'Easter eggs', some obvious, others obscure.

It was licensed for the U.S. by ADV Films.

Characters

Ai’s twin brother and the son of missing scientists Mary and Joe Hayakawa. The steadfast and resolute Yu and his sister Ai boarded the Ghost Train to the mysterious world which lies beyond the pillar of darkness, in hopes of finding their missing parents. Yu definitely comes off as the more passive of the twins. He has a special connection with the mysterious Kaze, to whom he looks up to as almost a savior type figure. Yu also adopts rambunctious chocobo Chobi as his own pet, and with the aid of the "penna", a chocobo feather that placed on his head, givining the ability to understand the feelings of any chocobo, even his pet/friend Chobi.

  • Ai Hayakawa

Yu’s twin sister. Ai is definitely the louder, brattier, and more outgoing of the two twins. After Ai’s backpack was stolen by Fungo, Fabula gave her the bizarre Poshepocket. This little purse with an attitude is able to spout anything from his mouth that Ai wishes for. The only problem is that Poshepocket can tend to be a tad stubborn and he is also known to misbehave. His mouth winds up being taped over after he eats a huge amount of the team’s food supply, but he does come in handy quite often throughout the show, spitting out very useful items that gets Ai and the others out of trouble. But the twins soon learn thing about themselves that would affect the fate of everyone else for all time...

  • Lisa Pacifist:

A woman dispatched by a mysterious agency to find the missing Hayakawa professors. But meeting the scientists' twin children, she decides to accompany them as they all are looking for the same people. Lisa is a practitioner of the powerful Kigen Arts (JP: kigenjitsu) style of magic, & her formidable powers have gotten the group out of dangerous situations on numerous occasions. As the series progressed, it becomes quite apparent that Lisa has developed an extreme sense of closeness with the twins as she looks after them in a combination motherly, big-sister fashion. She also displays a unique fondness for Kaze during their travels together throughout the perilous world of Wonderland. As a child, she witnessed the battle between SwordDragon and Chaos-GunDragon.

Kaze is a lost traveler from another world who has forgotten his name and everything else about himself. His original home world, Windaria, was destroyed by Chaos, and now that he is in Wonderland, he has nothing to do but plot to destroy his arch-enemy Makenshi, or White Cloud as Kaze calls him. The truth is that they were friends, but when Kaze turned himself into soil to become GunDragon (who was fused into Chaos) and Makenshi had to destroy him as SwordDragon, Kaze lost most of his memory and believed that it Makenshi and not Chaos that was responsible for his world's destruction. He was the older brother of Aura, who used the last of her dying strength to turn herself into Soil to give Kaze a chance to fight.

Kaze showed up and traveled Lisa and the twins for a portion of their journey, but he is hesitant to commit to protecting them, even though he knows that he should. He is the wielder of the incredibly powerful Magun, and the user of Soil to call his Summons like GunDragon. He is called "Black Wind" by the villains, "Mister-Kaze" by the kids, and "that man" by Lisa. Over time, after being reunited with his old friend Moogle, Kaze regained his memory and with Makenshi, defeated Earl Tyrant once and for all.

  • Makenshi:

Shrouded in mystery, we initially meet Makenshi serving as a henchman for the finicky Earl Tyrant. However, Makenshi has another name, spoken only from the lips of Kaze, who knows him as White Cloud. A native for long-destroyed realm of Misteria, Makenshi used the power of Mist and his SwordDragons to fight. Makenshi seems to be indifferent to Earl Tyrant’s ambitions, as he only joined the Earl's group to learn more about Chaos. When the finale battle began, Makenshi returned he favor to Kaze by possessing Chaos himself. After GunDragon and Chaos-SwordDragon killed each other, Makenshi was unconscious, but Crux took him away. He had a older brother named Madoushi.

  • Earl Tyrant

The tempestuous ruler of Wonderland, this little brat is actually a human representation of Chaos, a entity that destroys other worlds, and feeds on the suffering and anguish of its people. It was the Earl's desire to collect all of the various crystals of Omega, whose power will give Chaos the ability to consume all outside worlds, with the Earl as the all-powerful ruler of the universe.

Lords of Gaudium

Earl Tyrant's four most loyal servants. They are responsible for ensuring Chaos' survival and their master's enjoyment by destroying his enemies and making others suffer.

This mushroom man is supposedly unable to be killed, even if chopped into very small pieces. He proves to be quite a formidable foe, who seems to have a deep desire to impress the Earl. But he was finally killed when he was betrayed by his comrades for his repeated failure.

  • Herba:
    • Voice Actor: Jessica Smolins
    • Seiyuu: Kana Ueda

A sassy, sexy plant girl who will sic her "Hug-Hug", an artificial plant that will eat anything (given half the chance) on those who get her angry. She is probably the weakest of the Lords of Gaudium, but undoubtedly the Earl’s favorite, for obvious reasons. Despite her fall into Chaos, she actually survived and 'bloomed' into a new Herba.

A arrogant shark-humanoid who seems to be one-step ahead of everyone. His greatest achievement was the treacherous Ocean Puzzle. Strangely, his mouth is in the back of his head. He drives a rather luxurious-looking convertible whose front seat looks more like a small swimming pool. He prides himself on collecting and using "data" from previous battles to plan an attack for the next, but these almost always end in failure.

The most dangerous of the Earl's henchman, he relies on other people to get his deeds done. His only job is to serve as the Earl's ambassador and ensure the well-being of Chaos, which he greatly enjoys. Some people believe Oscha is an aspect of Chaos itself, due to the fact that Oscha, as a word, is actually an anagram of Chaos. He survived his fall in the final episode, though his mask is cracked.

Comodeen

A group of people who refused to give in to despair and banded together to bring order to WonderLand and stop Earl Tyrant's evil. Only four prinicpal members are known.

  • Knave: The Leader of the Comodeen, a romantic by nature. He wields a bazooka.

The only female member of the Comodeen, or so it would seem. She's a bit of a tomboy in personality (though she was more feminine as a child). She wields a pan-flute version of the bow guns the generic members use. She develops a crush on Cid and has a taste for reptiles and amphibians.

  • Fungo: The youngest and most recent member of the Comodeen, he introduced Lisa and the twins to the Comodeen (after he stole Ai's backpack and ate it). From his homeworld, stealing was a way of life and was deemed perfectly acceptable. Fungo also has a sixth sense, even though it always takes effect just seconds before something bad happens and can understand Cactuar.

The most popular member of the Comodeen as well the group's greatest advantage. Cid's inventions are always benefical, though he names them after women and cares for them a little too deeply. When his machines get even slightly scratched or otherwise "broken", Cid goes mental with his 'Ultimate Hammer' attack. He was the one who invented Elizabeth, better known as the Ghost Train. But he never got to ride his Elizabeth and was heartbroken when he learned Omega obliterated it. But he overcame his grief with his new Comodeen projects, the submarine Jane (used to fetch "Flying Water" from Teros) and the airship Sylvia (used for the final battle aginst Earl Tyrant, though it never happened).

Other/Miscellaneous

Better known as the "guide", she appears before and after each episode, giving a brief synopsis of the previous episode at the beginning, and "prophecising" (basically giving a preview) of the next episode. She rarely get involved, with the exception of giving Ai Poshepocket, and saving the twins and Lisa when Omega destroys the Ghost Train.

  • Lou Lupus

A fairy marionette brought to life by Oscha to spy on the twins and Lisa. Her entire vocabulary seems to be "ku-ku-ru-yu". She's not quite mindless, though...as she developed feelings for Makenshi when he saved her. This act resulted in Crux rebelling against Oscha and helping in the Earl's defeat. After the final battle, Crux took Makenshi away from the scene tend to his wounds.

An iridescent boy who's actually the heart of Omega, a creature whose mere existence destroys things due to its unstable power. It was torn into pieces which were spread around Wonderland, but it's pieces are still alive and search for each other so they can be one again. Clear ended up in Teros where he stayed until Bolbol made him a cloak of Flying Water to cover his entire body and hold his power at bay. Clear hates himself for destroying everything he touches.

Ai tries to bring him close, but an unfortunate incident with Pist's monsters ends up with his glove being torn off and an explosion occurring, separating him from Ai. Clear was captured and was fused with his Flying Water suit to create a stable crystal for the Earl to asborb. But Clear was saved by PochiePocket in the end.

  • Joe & Mary Hayakawa

Seiyuu: Yuuko Minaguchi(Mary)

Ai and Yu's parents, geologists by trade. They disappeared into Wonderland on the Day of Sucession and entered to Earth to write out their findings. Twelve years later, they went back, only to captured by Earl Tyrant and under the influence of Herba's Manipulas, use their research abilities to further the Earl's plans.

  • Aura

Kaze's younger sister from the world of Windeira. Aura was mortally injured when their world was destroyed by Chaos. She turned herself into Soil for Kaze to use to fight Chaos as GunDragon.

  • Madoushi

Makenshi's older brother from Misteria. Consumed by sibling rivalry gone awry, he always in his younger brother's shadow and wanted to see who was stronger... so much so that even after he died when Chaos attack. He was resurrected by Oscha, so he can challenge Makenshi to see once and for all who was the greater brother. But Makenshi was reluctantly forced to take his brother down for good.

  • Bolbol

A weird, Italian-accent clothier living near Teros who has the ability to make Flying Water clothes for a hefty amount of Gil. Lou worked under Bolbol so he can make her a cape of Flying Water.

  • Sagi

A young boy found by Lisa in a mansion. Sagi spended his time laying a guilt trip on Lisa. As it turns out, he's the embodiment of a sagisou (egret orchid) whom Lisa confided in as a child. It somehow ended up in WonderLand by one of Oscha's crazy contraptions and manifested in a form that only Lisa could see.

  • ChocoBaba

An extremely whacked-out Chocbo-loving old lady, whose repertoire of conversation consists of "So the rumours say". He unwilling gave Yu her Pention to enable to talk to Chocobos.

  • ChocoImo

Chocobaba's younger sister, She's just as wacky as her sister, and says "maybe/maybe not" after her sentences.

  • Touya: A character exclusive to Final Fantasy Unlimited: After, Touya goes to the same school as Yu and Ai, the latter whom he has feelings for.
  • Dolwa: A character exclusive to Final Fantasy Unlimited: After, Dolwa is the man who sent Lisa to find the Hayakawa proffessors.
