In the USA, Fish was a spinoff of the television series Barney Miller. It starred Abe Vigoda as Detective Phil Fish and Florence Stanley as his wife Bernice. For a while, the character of Phil Fish continued to appear on Barney Miller as Vigoda headlined this program.

In the series, Fish and Bernice became foster parents to five racially-mixed children known as "Persons in Need of Supervision", or PINS. The kids were played by Todd Bridges, Denise Miller, Len Bari , John Cassisi and Sarah Natoli .

Eventually, Fish left Barney Miller altogether, and his character retired from the New York Police Department.

Fish was directed by Jeremiah Morris and aired from February of 1977 through June of 1978 on ABC.

In the UK, Fish was a BBC drama series of 2002, starring Paul McGann as an idealistic lawyer who specialised in industrial tribunals . In court, he often came up against a female lawyer, played by Jemma Redgrave. Fish's wife had mysteriously disappeared, leaving him to look after his young son, and he began an affair with Redgrave. The other regular character was Trevor (Mick Ford ), an amateur philosopher who owned a mobile burger bar. Only one series was made.
