Flag of Ecuador
The flag of Ecuador was adopted on September 26, 1860. It bears a strong resemblance to the flag of Colombia.
Although the law of 5 December, 1900 (Registro Oficial No.1272) establishes the civil flag and ensign as the same as the state flag and ensign minus the arms, in practice the state flag is often used as a civil flag. The only difference between the civil flags of Ecuador and Colombia resides in their proportions. The war ensign has 2:3 proportions but is otherwise the same as the state ensign.
Ecuador is unique in that there is a special flag reserved for municipal buildings; this is the civil flag with a ring of 19 white stars (one for each of the provinces) on the blue stripe.
