Description
In the book, Flat Stanley, by Jeff Brown , the character Stanley Lambchop, is flattened by a falling bulletin board. But he's ok, and he tries to make the best of it, and soon he's sliding into rooms through the opening at the bottom of closed doors and kind to his younger brother by playing as a kite for him, he even helps catch some art museum thieves by posing as a painting on the wall, what a hero! But one special advantage is that Flat Stanley can now visit his friends by getting mailed in an envelope.
This premise has provided a reason for students who read the story in schools to make connections with others, specially other students of member schools who've signed up in the [Flat Stanley Project] and it's touted in its website as An International Literacy and Communications Activity for Primary and Junior Students, Teachers and Families.
Students begin by reading the book and becoming acquainted with the story then they make paper Flat Stanleys (or pictures of the Stanley Lambchop character) and then keep a journal for a few days, documenting the places and activities which Flat Stanley is involved in. Then the Flat Stanley and the journal are sent to others who are asked to treat Flat Stanley as a visiting guest and add to the journal. Then Flat Stanley and the journal are returned to the original sender. Students may find it fun to plot Flat Stanley's travels on maps and share the contents of the journal. Often, a Flat Stanley returns with a photo or postcard from his visit. Some teachers may prefer to use email only, and this is noted in the Flat Stanley List of Participants.
The Flat Stanley Project is made up of a group of teachers who want to provide students with a fun reason to write. The students' written work may be sent by conventional mail and e-mail to other project members or acquaintances of the readers. Visit the Flat Stanley List of Participants to see where one may send a Flat Stanley or who may be sending a Flat Stanley to you.
Notable 'Stanley's
Not all Flat Stanleys ae named Stanley, for variety's sake at least. One of these, Flat Mark, gained considerable media attention in Canada in late 2003 when he was the 'guest' of newly-sworn-in Prime Minister Paul Martin, and appeared in a photo with his cabinet at the swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall.
