The first gold coin minted in Europe. First minted in Florence in 1252 and known as a florin (see also bezants).
a synonym for Guilder, a currency previously used in the Netherlands.
a currency once used in Florence.
a name for the two-shilling coin used in the UK from 1849 as a first step towards decimalisation in 1971, and other countries which used to operate a British style currency system. Such examples include:
- Australia, prior to decimalisation in 1966
- New Zealand, prior to decimalisation in 1967
- Ireland, (in the Irish language flóirín) prior to Decimal Day, 1971; see Irish florin coin
- Germany, Florin were used from 1680-1790
a gold coin valued at six shillings issued and withdrawn in England in 1344
