Foramen lacerum
The foramen lacerum is a triangular shaped hole in the base of the skull located at the base of the medial pterygoid plate through which the internal carotid artery passes.
Carotid artery
The passage of the internal carotid artery through the foramen lacerum is a controversial topic. Several anatomy texts state that the foramen lacerum is actually occluded by cartilaginous soft tissue and that the carotid artery actually enters the skull base posterior to this foramen and then passes over it to travel anteriorly through the carotid canal.
