Fort San Jerónimo

Fort San Jerónimo is a small fort located in the entrance to what is known today as Condado, Puerto Rico lagoon in San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was built during the 17th century to defend the carriageways that led to the inlet of San Juan. The fort defended San Juan from attacks by Sir Francis Drake in 1595, Sir George Clifford "Earl of Cumberland" in 1598 and Sir Ralph Abercromby.

The fort is located adjacent to the grounds of the Caribe Hilton Hotel. Unlike similar forts near Old San Juan, it is not part of San Juan National Historic Site. San Jerónimo is owned the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, but is managed by the Hilton. Tourists visit the fort and sometimes the hotel uses it for private gatherings. "El Polvorín" or powder house that was built in 1769 and supplied the fort with gunpowder is part of Luis Muñoz Rivera park.
