Franklin County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 129,313.

Franklin County was created on September 9, 1784 from part of Cumberland County and named in honor of Benjamin Franklin.

Its county seat is Chambersburg6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,001 km² (773 mi²). 1,999 km² (772 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 129,313 people, 50,633 households, and 36,405 families residing in the county. The population density is 65/km² (168/mi²). There are 53,803 housing units at an average density of 27/km² (70/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.33% White, 2.33% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.55% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 50,633 households out of which 30.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.00% are married couples living together, 8.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 23.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the county, the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 7.90% from 18 to 24, 28.20% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 16.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.90 males.
