History

The riding was created in 1914 and was originally named York-Sunbury after York and Sunbury, the two counties it was composed of. Previously York County was its own riding and Sunbury County was joined with Queens County. In 1987 it changed its name to Fredericton after a redrawing of the boundaries caused it to lose many rural parts of the two counties. It was renamed Fredericton-York-Sunbury shortly after the 1988 election. When further rural areas were moved to other ridings in the 1996 redrawing it changed its name back to Fredericton. The Minto and Chipman areas were added to the riding in 2003.
