The GMC Safari, counterpart to the Chevrolet Astro, has remained largely unchanged since its inception in 1985. General Motors announced in 2004 that the Safari and Astro will be discontinued in 2005, and the Baltimore, Maryland assembly plant where both are built will be closed.
Initial advertising boasted that it was a vehicle that will make you "...realize that life is too big for a minivan" referring to the Chrysler minivans. Its specifications include a 160 to 190 horsepower (119 to 142 kW) V6 engine, depending on options and/or model year. It seats up to 8 passengers with optional towing capabilities. The Safari has never gotten better than 16 miles per US gallon, no matter what year.
