It is thought that the first man how was to find out that Iceland (Ísland) was an island is Gardar Svavarsson (Icelandic: Garðar Svavarsson) he came ashore at Hornafjörd (Icelandic: Hornafjörður) he camped for the winter and build a house for himself and cru for which is now known as Húsavík (English: Bayhouse). Following spring he sat sail for Norway but before that happened a man escaped from him named Nattfari (Icelandic: Náttfari English translation: nightwalker) and took along with him a slave and woman, Gardar praised the new found land which he named Gardarsholm after himself (Icelandic: Garðarshólmur). Gardar never came back to Iceland but his son Uni, (known as Uni danski, English: Uni the Danish) came here later and lived at Unaos at Fljotsdalsherad (Icelandic: Unaósi á Fljótdalshéraði).
