Gaspé Shrew

The Gaspé Shrew, Sorex gaspensis, is a small North American shrew found on the Gaspé peninsula of Quebec, on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia and in New Brunswick. It is closely related to the somewhat larger Long-tailed Shrew, Sorex dispar, found in the Appalachian Mountains.

It is light grey in colour with a pointed snout and a long tail.

These animals are found in areas with steep rocky slopes near streams.

They eat insects and spiders.

They are thought to breed in the spring and summer.

This species was first described in A new species of shrew from the Gaspe Peninsula in no. 109, 1924 of American Museum Novitates, a publication of the American Museum of Natural History.
