He is a mystery, a man who operates in silence, always in touch with the spiritual force of his people. Christened "Gateway" by the criminals who captured him and forced him into service, the Australian aborigine spent most of his time at the Reavers' Australian headquarters silently sitting atop a rock. After defeating the Reavers, the X-Men took over their headquarters and freed Gateway. Soon after, Gateway began voluntarily using his teleportational powers to transport the X-Men from place to place. Gateway, through still an enigma, has become an unofficial member of the team.

Gateway was the one who brought Penance to Gen X, and seems to have had a mentor/student relationship with M.

Gateway has been revealed to be Bishop's great-grandfather.
