Gavin Christopher was born in Chicago where he started outplaying music at a very early age. Having been schooled by the likes of Oscar Brown Jr. , Donny Hathaway and later on Curtis Mayfield, he honed his writing and singing skills and set out on his musical journey. At that point, Gavin was is another band called "High Voltage" with Bobby Watson , Tony Maiden and Lalomie Washburn , who later joined Rufus with Chaka. And one song Gavin had written, "Once You Get Started" was recorded by Rufus, which instantly became on of their biggest hits.

Gavin decided it was time to leave Chicago and move to Los Angeles, where he was signed to his first deal with Island Records.
