Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf

The Gemeentelijk Vervoerbedrijf (GVB) (municipal transport company) of Amsterdam operates

  • 3 metro lines, partly elevated, no level crossings.
  • a light rail line (sneltram = fast tram) to the neighboring town Amstelveen, partly using metro tracks, partly on the street with its own lanes, but with level crossings.
  • 16 tram lines, on the street, partly mixed with all other traffic, partly on lanes shared with buses and taxis, and partly on separate lanes.
  • many bus lines; bus traffic is often mixed with other traffic, but sometimes on lanes shared with trams and taxis or lanes for buses only.
  • Several ferries across the IJ; at least one is frequent, operating 24 hours a day, free of charge.

A new metro line, North/South Line, and a new tramline [1] are under construction.

  • 51: Centraal station - Amstelveen Poortwachter (partly light rail)
    • Centraal Station - Nieuwmarkt - Waterlooplein - Weesperplein - Wibautstraat - Amstel NS - Spaklerweg - Overamstel - RAI NS - Zuid/WTC (change to light rail) - De Boelelaan/VU - A. J. Ernststraat - Van Boshuizenstraat - Uilenstede - Kronenburg - Zonnestein - Onderuit - Oranjebaan - Amstelveen Centrum - Oudekerkerlaan - Sportlaan - Marne - Meent - Brink - Poortwachter.
  • 53: Centraal station - Gaasperplas
    • Centraal Station - Nieuwmarkt - Waterlooplein - Weesperplein - Wibautstraat - Amstel NS - Spaklerweg - Van der Madeweg - Venserpolder - Diemen Zuid NS - Verrijn Stuartweg - Ganzenhoef - Kraaiennest - Gaasperplas.
  • 54: Centraal Station - Gein
    • Centraal Station - Nieuwmarkt - Waterlooplein - Weesperplein - Wibautstraat - Amstel NS - Spaklerweg - Van der Madeweg - Duivendrecht NS - Strandvliet/Arena - Bijlmer NS - Bullewijk - Holendrecht - Reigersbos - Gein.

    • power 600 volt DC
    • the line to Amstelveen partly runs on metro track, therefore the light rail vehicles on this line are capable of using 600 volt DC as well as 750 volt DC
    • lines: 1 CS - Osdorp De Aker, 2 CS - Nieuw Sloten, 3 Zoutkeetsgracht - Muiderpoort station, 4 CS - Rai NS, 5 CS - Amstelveen Binnenhof, 6 Plantage Parklaan - Leidseplein - VU Medisch Centrum, 7 Slotermeer - Leidseplein - Flevopark, 9 CS - Diemen Sniep, 10 Van Hallstraat - Azartplein, 12 Amstel station - Station Sloterdijk, 13 CS - Geuzenveld Lambertus Zijlplein, 14 Slotermeer - Dam - Flevopark, 16 CS - VU Medisch Centrum, 17 CS - Osdorp Dijkgraafplein, 24 CS - Olympiaweg, 25 CS - Pres.
