General Florentius
Florentius was a fifth century Roman military leader.
His date of birth is unknown but he was reported to have died around the year 459 AD at his small villa outside the city walls of Rome. Florentius was second in command to General Flavius Aetius. He had also served under Aetius' father Gaudentius before his death. He fought in two major wars; the first war was against the Visigoths which caused Florentius to lose one leg, the other war was at the Battle of Chalons which he lead his soldiers bravely in battle.
In 454 AD he was witness to Aetius' murder, leaving us with his famous quote..."The Emperor has cut off his right hand with his left." After Aetius' death by the Emperor Valentinian III in 454 AD, Florentius, growing old and tired of fighting battles, retreated to his small villa in Rome. There is no evidence of his support in 455 A.D to newly crowned Emperor Petronius Maximus, instead he remained in Rome until his death in 459 A.D.
