The roadrunners are two species of bird in the genus Geococcyx of the cuckoo family, Cuculidae, native to North and Central America.
They are large long-legged birds with long thick dark bills and long dark tails. They are terrestrial, and although capable of flight, they spend most of their time on the ground. They run down prey or occasionally jump up to catch insects or birds. They mainly eat insects, reptiles, rodents, tarantulas, scorpions and small birds.
The roadrunners breeding habitat is deserts and shrubby country. The two species are:
- Greater Roadrunner, Geococcyx californiana (southwestern United States)
- Lesser Roadrunner, Geococcyx velox (Mexico and Central America)
