E.C.G. Sudarshan is an Indian physicist and author. Considered by many to be one of the best scientists India ever produced.

Ennakkal Chandy George Sudarshan was born on September 16 1931, at Pallam, close to the district of Kottayam, Kerala. He graduated with honors from the Madras Christian College in 1951 (now called Chennai). He did his master's at the University of Madras, India. In 1958 he received his Ph.D. from the University of Rochester, New York.

Dr. Sudarshan is best known for the formulation of "Tachyons", particles that travel faster than light. This is a direct contradiction of Einstein's Relativity Theory, which postulates that faster than light travel is impossible. After some reluctance from the scientific community, his theories were eventually published, catapulting him to international fame. So far Tachyons have not been physically found, but when it happens, it could revolutionize communications and space travel.

He was nominated for the Nobel Prize six times. He has received many honours and probably the most notable Indian award is the Padma Bhushan awarded by the President of India.

He has taught at such Institutions as the Tata Institute Of Fundamental Research, University Of Rochester, Syracuse University and Harvard. From 1969 onwards he is a Professor of Physics at the University Of Texas, Austin.

His areas of interest include elementary particle physics, quantum optics, quantum information, quantum field theory, gauge field theories, fibre bundles, classical mechanics and foundations of physics.
