George W. Vanderbilt

George Washington Vanderbilt (1839-1864) was an American soldier and member of the prominent Vanderbilt family.

The youngest child of the family founders, Cornelius Vanderbilt and Sophia Johnson, George Vanderbilt went to West Point and fought in the American Civil War. At Shiloh, he contracted tubercolosis and died in 1864 at the age of 25.

George Washington Vanderbilt was also the name of the youngest son of William Henry Vanderbilt. The second G.W. Vanderbilt build the fabulous Biltmore Estate outside of Asheville, North Carolina.
