German Party

The German Party (Deutsche Partei) is a minor German political party. Currently it is represented only at the local level in Germany. However, from 1949 to 1961 it was part of the ruling coalition in the Bundestag (federal parliament).

History

It originated in the Deutsch-Hannoversche Partei (German-Hanoverian Party) which was formed in 1866 after the annexation of Hanover by Prussia to agitate against the annexation. It consistently had representation in the parliament of Prussia and sometimes the Reichstag until the fall of the Weimar Republic in 1933. After World War II it reformed as the German Party, a liberal, patriotic, and christian democratic party. It was party of the coalition led by Konrad Adenauer until 1961, when nine of its members defected to the CDU, and it failed to receive any seats in the 1961 federal election. It continues as a fairly minor party in Germany.
