Gertrud Rabestein

Gertrud Rabestein was a female guard at two Nazi concentration camps, and a guard supervisor at a prison during seven years of the Third Reich.

Gertrud Rabestein was born in Naumburg, Germany on January 5, 1903. In 1938 she began her training as a camp overseer in the Lichtenburg early camp in Saxony along with Maria Mandel, Juana Bormann and Jane Bernigau. in May 1939, the middle aged overseer was posted with the rest of the women guards to the newly opened concentration camp at Ravensbruck, Germany. She stayed there and worked as an Aufseherin until 1942, when she was assigned to the Naumburg prison in her hometown. There she became a Oberwachmeisterin (Female Chief Overseer [of a prison]). She stayed in her post until the Soviets arrived in April 1945. After the war, an East German court sentenced Gertrud Rabestein to life imprisonment for the murder and mistreatment of female camp inmates.
