Gheorghe Muresan

Gheorghe Muresan (born February 14, 1971 in Triteni, Romania) is a former Romanian basketball player who also payed in the NBA. A 7'7" (2.31m) center, Muresan is the tallest man to ever play in the NBA, standing a few centimeters taller than Manute Bol. Muresan played college basketball at Cluj University in Romania. He played professional baketball in Europe in 1992 and was an instant hit with fans. The NBA took interest in him and he was drafted by the Washington Bullets in 1993. He played from in the NBA from 1993 to 2000. In those years he played with the Washington Bullets (1993-1998) and the New Jersey Nets (1998-2000). He was named NBA Most Improved Player for the 1995-96 season, averaging career-highs of 14.5 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.26 blocks per game. His NBA career averages were 9.8 points, 6.4 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. After leaving the NBA, Muresan played European basketball again for three more years before returning to live in New Jersey with his family.

He also dabbled in acting, receiving good reviews as the title character in the 1998 movie My Giant .


He has always proudly asserted his Romanian identity and has never hidden his humble origin. Muresan was born in the district of Cluj in a poor family.
