Googoosh
Googoosh (گوگوش in Persian), Iranian pop singer and actress. Born Fa'eghe Atashin (فائقه آتشین in Persian) on February 7, 1951 in Tehran. She began acting and singing at a very young age.
She is the most famous Iranian female pop singer, also often called the Queen of Pop. After the Islamic Revolution she was banned from public performance like most female singers. Nevertheless she made a major comeback in 2000 on a world tour, also publishing a new album called Zoroaster (زرتشت in Persian). Currently (as of 2004) Googoosh is based in Canada.
Over the years many artists covered Googoosh's songs, for example, Enrique Iglesias, being the most popular among them has re-sung her famous love song Baavar Kon (باور کن), which means "believe" in Persian.
Googoosh also starred in more than 20 films. This is an incomplete list:
- Hamsafar (همسفر)
- Maah Asal (ماه عسل)
- Nazanin (نازنین)
- Chohar Khahar (چهار خواهر)
- Ehsas-e Dagh (احساس داغ)
- Dar Emtedad-e Shab (در امتداد شب)
- Mamal Emrikaayi (ممل امریکایی)
Her songs are often very sad and sometimes feature elements of traditional Persian music.
She has been known to be anti-Semitic, though she made an apology right before her 2000 world tour to the Iranian Jewish community.
