Gorani (Kurds)

Gorani, sometimes also called Hewrami, the dialect of a small group of Kurds in the province of Kermanshah, Iran and in the Hewraman mountains between Iran and Iraq.

The dialect is considered to be close to Zazaki. The oldest literary documents in Kurdish language are written in Gorani. Many speaker of this dialect belong to the religious grouping Ahl-e Haqq, with many religious documents writen in this dialect.

Since the nineteenth century, Gorani has slowly been replaced by the Sorani dialect both in Iran and in Iraq. This change has much to do with the growing influence of main stream Sunni Islam over Ahl-Haqqd Kurds

Written literature:

  • Shîrîn u Xusrew by Xanay Qûbadi (lived 1700-1759), published 1975 in Bagdad.
  • Diwan des Feqe Qadiri Hemewend, 19th century.
  • The Koran in Gorani, translated in the 19. Century by Haci Nuri Eli Ilahi (Nuri Eli Shah).
