Egypt is divided into 26 governorates (muhafazat, singular - muhafazah):

  7. Al Isma'iliyah
  8. Al Jizah
  9. Al Minufiyah

  14. Ash Sharqiyah
  15. As Suways
  16. Aswan
  17. Asyut
  18. Bani Suwayf
  19. Bur Sa'id

  22. Kafr ash Shaykh
  23. Matruh
  24. Qina
  25. Shamal Sina'
  26. Suhaj

Most governorates have a population density of more than 1000 per km², while the three large ones have a population density of less than 2 per km²
